WILMINGTON, N.C. – In the first elimination game of the 2024 CAA Baseball tournament, Northeastern (38-17) fell to William & Mary (31-25) by a score of 9-6 on Thursday morning at Brooks Field.
Despite an early 4-1 lead for the Huskies, the William & Mary bats were able to belt 13 two-out hits, 19 total on the day, to take the lead in the fifth and hold on for the upset victory.
- William & Mary got the offense started early with two hits in the first, the second of which was an RBI double, to lead 1-0.
- After a scoreless top of the second by the Huskies' defense, Alex Lane led off the bottom of the second with a towering shot to left field to tie the game at 1-1.
- Northeastern took its first lead of the day with a three-run third inning. It began with a lead off double by catcher Gregory Bozzo, who was then scored by Cam Maldonado on an RBI single up the middle to lead 2-1.
- Maldonado went on to steal second, take third on a wild pitch, and then scored on another wild pitch for the 3-1 lead.
- Luke Beckstein reached on a walk and advanced all the way to third on those wild pitches, and then was scored on an RBI ground out by Lane for the three-run lead.
- William & Mary cut the deficit down to one run in the top of the fifth with four singles – the Tribe's potential fifth hit of the inning was grabbed on a diving catch by Maldonado in right field to end the inning with the Huskies still on top, 4-3.
- The Tribe continued their two-out offensive production with two runs to tie and take the lead in the top of the sixth inning, 5-4.
- William & Mary tacked on two more in the seventh on an RBI double to lead 7-4.
- With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, with Sirota on third from a walk and a steal, and Tyler MacGregor on second after a single and steal, Jack Doyle hit a single up the middle to give Northeastern it's first runs on the scoreboard since the third, cutting the deficit to one run at 7-6.
- The Tribe once again extended the lead with two-out hitting in the ninth, with four straight singles to score their eighth and ninth runs of the afternoon.
- Starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti worked five innings, allowing just three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. He left the contest with a 4-3 lead but was a no decision on the scoresheet as the lead was lost the inning after he left.
- Northeastern goes 0-2 in the CAA tournament for the first time since 2009, and the first time in the Mike Glavine era. It ends a streak of Northeastern appearing in three straight CAA Championship games, and four of the last five.
The Huskies await the 2024 NCAA Baseball Selection Show on Monday, May 27 to determine if their season will continue with an at-large bid.
