Baldur's Gate 3's beefy patch 7 will finally drop next week (1)

At the end of a PAX West panel looking back on the development and reception of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian boss Swen Vincke revealed that the game's highly anticipated Patch 7 will finally arrive next week after months of teasers and playtesting.

We first heard about Patch 7 back in April, and the marquee additions are official mod support and overhauled evil endings. On the modding front, we won't be seeing a full campaign-building toolset like Divinity: Original Sin 2 had, but BG3's tools and support will make it far easier to create and install custom classes, UI elements, spells, QoL fixes, dice, and more. Further, the official tools will hopefully make it less likely that future patches—Larian has said it's almost, but not quite done tweaking BG3—will bork your mods or modded saves. Patch 7 definitely will though, at least until mod authors catch up, so watch out for that.

The evil endings look like they'll be bone chilling extended cutscenes for the vilest of the vile bastards out there, something to make up for their lack of a feel-good shindig when all is said and done. Larian's teased snippets of two main deviations: a Dark Urge and non-Dark Urge version with slight variations of the non-Durge evil ending for other Origin characters. The default evil ending is pretty classico, reminiscent of something like Knights of the Old Republic, but that's not a bad thing. The protagonist asserts psychic control of all the tadpoled schlubs out there to found their own evil not-Mind Flayer kingdom. I really dig a clip Larian showed of one such schlub's perspective, imagining they're just picking apples and having a gay old time while in reality they're a psychic slave in the dark world. Kinda reminds me of Meet the Pyro in a weird way.

The Dark Urge one is gnarly though, with previews showing the default albino Dragonborn Durge killing off their companions and wandering through a meaty, bloody afterscape under a darkened sun. Think The Eclipse from Berserk or Elden Ring's Frenzied Flame ending. It's not like the game didn't warn us: "At night, you dream of a dead world," reads an early in-game journal entry for the Durge's personal quest. "Lakes of gall, pulsating heaps of expired flesh. You're the only living being. When the red sun burns out, you drive the last dagger through your heart."

Partial patch notes for the update, as well as scuttlebut from playtesters on the BG3 subreddit, indicate there'll be plenty for non-omnicidal players as well. Continued QoL changes, added reactivity throughout the game, and what sound like some pretty big changes to the side character, Alfira.

I was a big dummy though and started a new Honour mode run a little bit ago though—I lost my first one at 80 hours early this year and have been itching to get back at it. I've already blasted through to the middle of Act 2 in 45 hours, but hopefully I don't get too much farther before Patch 7 drops. Previous patches haven't followed any pattern to when in the week they come out, and rather than getting an exact date from Larian ahead of time, the studio will probably just implement it in the coming days.

FAQs

Should I destroy the brain Baldur's Gate 3? ›

Since the talking brain can be used to aid you, you should help the talking brain unless you don't want to for roleplay purposes. Either way, you can continue the story by receiving the quest from someone else if you don't help the brain and receive the quest there.

How often can you short rest in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

You are able to take a short rest twice per day. Taking a Long Rest will reset your available Short Rests back to the maximum of two.

How is Baldur Gate 3? ›

That determination is also impacted by the game's dice roll mechanic where a player's roll determines if the outcome of a character action is a success or failure. Baldur's Gate 3 received critical acclaim, with praise for its gameplay, narrative, production quality and voice-acting performances.

What happens when you level up in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

Every time a class levels up, they'll increase their health pool, gain access to new class features, and occasionally earn a feat or ability score improvement. Leveling up is a critical part of the Baldur's Gate 3 experience, so it's important to understand how XP works.

Should you cripple us in BG3? ›

For that reason, we suggest freeing and not mutilating this new lifeform. Us is basically a small, temporary advantage in the earliest chapter of the game - a controllable, and pretty powerful (if limited) ally who has a lot of health and some good melee attacks that match many of the standard Baldur's Gate 3 weapons.

What is the most powerful weapon in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

However, its superiority in Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't stop there. The Everburn Blade equips players with fundamental attack maneuvers. Overall, it stands out as one of — if not the most — most potent weapons in the game.

Should I let Astarion bite me? ›

Should you Let Astarion Bite You? Letting Astarion bite you is an easy way to get approval with him. The simple answer is yes, as the only downside is gaining the Bloodless debuff, while Astarion gains the Happy buff and his approval rating of you increases.

What is the worth of a single mortal life in BG3? ›

The question is unanswerable by mortals as a life's worth is determined by the individual and all those who were affected by the life of the individual, and we don't have the weights on those factors. Of the available options I lean towards the infinite value one.

Is there a consequence to long resting BG3? ›

You can long rest as often as you'd like, provided you have the resources. However, long rests move "time" forward and may affect the outcomes of quests, the availability of NPCs, etc.

Who is the most romanced character in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

But let's talk romance: while Baldur's Gate 3 has a number of intriguing romance paths, Shadowheart's is easily the most popular, with 51.3% players completing her romance arc (which you can find a walkthrough of here). It turns out she really is God's favorite princess and the most interesting girl in the world.

What is the best class in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

The best classes in BG3 are Bard, Rogue, Wizard, Cleric, and Paladin, as they are the best at fulfilling their role. All five of these classes are able to accomplish their specialty better than any other, even if just by a small margin.

What's still missing from Baldur's Gate 3? ›

The Upper City Is Missing From Baldur's Gate 3

This huge section of the city was mentioned specifically by Larian Studio's co-founder Swen Vincke in the final Panel From Hell on July 7, 2023, just four weeks before Baldur's Gate 3's full release.

What is Max level in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

Summary. Baldur's Gate 3 is based on Dungeons & Dragons 5e but has a maximum level of 12, not the tabletop RPG's maximum level of 20. Expansion of the level cap is unlikely.

Is the Emperor evil in BG3? ›

He leans more toward evil than neutral. He's willing to kill his best friend and literally enslave the world using the Nether Brain. He even joins the Nether Brain if you don't side with him. He has no soul, as all illithids don't, and it's proven by his actions when you even slightly act against him.

When should I rest in Baldur's Gate 3? ›

I think it's a good idea to rest at least after any quest completion (incl. side quests) but definitely don't try to avoid resting if you're hurt. It's hard to pinpoint a frequency as there's no time in the game so... just rest when you are low on hp and out of short rests.

Should you control the Elder Brain in BG3? ›

If you choose the 'submit to the Elder Brain' option at any time, the game will end. This is technically one of the multiple ending options, and it's certainly not one of the best options, but it's worth doing if you're trying to see every possible outcome - and if you have a recent quick-save to go back to.

Should I purge mind or consume BG3? ›

Unless you're doing an evil playthrough and don't care enough about the advantage on Intelligence saving throws that the Githzerai Mind Barrier provides, it is highly advisable that you purge the Waking Mind's consciousness rather than consume it.

Should you consume the mind flayer brain BG3? ›

If the Mind Flayer is fed, it will leave the windmill after a long rest. It will later re-appear in the Lower City, killing a couple of NPCs. The Mind Flayer can still be killed for its brain after giving it a corpse, but consuming it at this point will not grant an additional illithid skill point.

Can you actually dominate the brain in BG3? ›

It is actually impossible to dominate the Elder Brain during your first encounter with it at the caustic brine lake. The final check is set at DC99. If, bychance, you manage a critical success (natural 20) on this roll, you will still not be able to dominate it.
