L’espace, un enjeu crucial pour les habitants de Macao : des comportements entre accommodations et contradictions

Au lendemain de la rétrocession en 1999, le Région d’Administration Spéciale de Macao a connu un grand bouleversem*nt sur son territoire. La libéralisation de l’économie locale a alors permis à la région et ses habitants de s’enrichir. Mais cette prospérité ne s’est pas effectuée sans difficultés. L’un des problèmes majeurs qu’a rencontré la RAS est le manque d’espace. Ce petit bout de territoire possède l’une des densités démographiques les plus fortes sur notre planète mais le gouvernement a toujours donné la priorité au développement économique au détriment de ses citoyens. Cette direction qu’à choisit le gouvernement entraîne aujourd’hui des répercussions sur le mode de vie des habitants ainsi que sur leur identité. En effet, le manque d’espace et les revendications identitaire sont les conséquences des politiques menées par le gouvernement qui souhaitait avant tout asseoir sa légitimité sur la région. Mais la fragilité du marché fait prendre conscience à la population qu’en cas de récession, elle n’aurait d’autres choix que de se sauver elle-même car les autorités ne proposent aucun filet de secours.
La présence portugaise à Macao. Une culture d'accommodements

In this article, I examine a number of urban features emerging from the coexistence of Portuguese and Chinese in Macau, a former Portuguese overseas possession returned to China in 1999. The study of the city’s material space formation requires combining an ethnographic approach with the analysis of historical elements. Analysing historical sites that were inscribed in a fragmented fashion in Macau’s urban fabric (the Leal Senado Square, the Chinese temples), as well as architectural designs that marry Portuguese and Chinese know-how and symbolism (the Church of Saint-Paul), I examine the relationship between urbanisation and cohabitation of the long-term in the production of place. The aim of this study being ultimately to show that the Portuguese presence in Macau reveals a culture of accommodations involved with the production and conservation of a world heritage of unique characteristics. Key-words: Portuguese presence, urbanisation, accommodation, heritage, Macau, China Résumé Dans cet article, j’examine des traits urbains induits par la coexistence entre Portugais et Chinois à Macao, ancienne possession de l’Outre-mer portugais retournée à la Chine en 1999. Réfléchissant à la formation de l’espace matériel de la ville, je mobilise les démarches ethnographique et historique. À partir de l’analyse de sites historiques qui ont été inscrits de manière segmentée sur le tissu urbain constitué (la Place du Leal Senado, les temples chinois), et d’architectures qui épousent savoir-faire et symbolisme portugais et chinois (l’Église Saint-Paul), j’interroge les rapports entre urbanisation et cohabitation sur l’histoire longue dans la production de cette localité. Le but de l’étude étant, finalement, de montrer que la présence portugaise à Macao révèle une culture d’accommodements qui contribua à la production et à la sauvegarde d’un patrimoine unique au monde. The present paper, originating from its author’s innocent search for his identity in his twenties as a postcolonial yearning for an emotion-driven, if not unconsciously voluntary, cultural self-colonization, appears ten years later as a self-reflexive and self-critical essay. It can be read as a piece of postcolonial literature apart, or as a commentary to his documentary Ou Mun Ian, Macaenses (2009) and its textual research (2010). This quest, if not construction or invention of identity, resonated with a cross-epochal public discourse which transcended Macau’s last colonial years and its first postcolonial decade, that Macau was never a colony but a unique result from a China-West exchange. This very amateur thirty-three-minute documentary largely shaped the author’s earlier belief in his undecolonizability and his later extended search and creation of his multiplying beliefs inside an Eurocentric expansion of an European universe.

The paper aims to discuss the role that visual anthropology and subaltern cultural medias play among the considered indigenous peoples in the Chinese speaking world, and particularly in the four cross-Strait territories of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. This paper suggests a semantic and historic analysis of the terms of indigenous, while retracing the arrival of these western concepts in Greater China as well as the manipulations and translations along history which are subjects of the present research. The western discipline of visual anthropology, together with cultural medias find their equivalences in these Chinese speaking territories, and are used for multiple purposes, which are not always clear.
