<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (5)

JOHN GILBERT KEELEYOn this one-year anniversary of the passing of my dad, John Gilbert Keeley, I have a few short, simple words to write – which is exactly what my dad would have liked, short and simple.Everyone who met my dad will have memories of him, and he lives on through those, but the impact he had on me and so many others will remain even long after we are gone.By that, I'm talking about the things I learned from my dad that I've been working to pass on to my own kids.First, was his incredible work ethic and perseverance. He would always tell us, "If they kick you out the front door, you go find that back door!" He worked very hard his whole life for all that he had and all that he and my mom gave us four children – he truly lived by one of his favorite expressions – there's no free lunch. I feel my siblings Maryse, Claudine, Pierre, and I all embody this in our daily lives.I think the most impactful thing my dad taught me was perspective and empathy. This was largely through his actions, not just a parental lecture. My dad viewed the world through the eyes of others as well as his own, which made him exceptionally kind and understanding. Finally, my dad was really funny! He had an expression to fit virtually any occasion. We probably all have our own favorites that we heard him say. Mine is, "there is always room at the top." It's back to that perseverance and never giving up. My brother, Pierre, and my husband, Marius, and I all gifted each other gavels with this engraved on it for our various graduations as it had such a deep impact on us all.Daddy, you've made it to the very top, up there with the Big Guy. On this one year without you, let's raise a virtual toast to you, Dad: you'll be forever loved and forever missed.

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (6)

JOYCE SCHNEIDERJoyce Schneider, 81 of Henderson, NV passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024. An educator, community philanthropist and motivational speaker, Joyce made every day of her life count. Growing up in Crofton, a rural Nebraska town along the Missouri River, she lived on her family farm and went to a one-room schoolhouse. After high school, she knew she wanted to become a teacher. Upon graduating with a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Wayne State College, she attended the University of Colorado and Northern Arizona University achieving her master's degree. Joyce also obtained her administrator license, but chose to stay where her passion was, in the classroom where she could inspire and make a difference in children's lives. She was blessed with a natural gift for education and seeing the best in children. Joyce taught for more than 40 years, beginning her teaching career in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1967 she packed up her red Pontiac and did the solo drive to Las Vegas beginning her education career for the Clark County School District teaching 3rd grade at Rex Bell, Lewis E. Rowe and opening Estes McDoniel and Vanderburg Elementary Schools. Early in her career, she was asked to co-develop the UNLV student teaching program. Through the years she taught student teachers how to be the best for their students. YES, I CAN! was proudly displayed at the front of the classroom and became the class slogan. Over many years, she had former students stop and tell her how those words rang true throughout their lives and how they lived by that motto daily. Stepping away from the classroom in 2004, she refocused and put her love for children and education into the community. Joyce was a member of the Josh Stevens Foundation and was Board President of the UNLV College of Education for many years. Another passion of hers was the Discovery Children's Museum. As a trustee board member for more than 20 years, she was named a "Friend of Kids" award recipient. Bringing education and excitement for learning together were her passions and the Discovery Children's Museum was where she shined brightly. As a community philanthropist, she was asked by schools, non-profit organizations and businesses to share her enthusiasm through motivational speaking. She loved bringing people together and sharing how each person was special to her and others. Joyce, a mentor to many and loved by all, demonstrated her positive attitude and love for life. Every day she would ask people what they were celebrating, because she believed each day was a chance to bring joy. Joyce is survived by her husband Stephen Schneider, daughter Mollie Schneider-Halvorsen (Ryan), son Marc (Kristin) and her five beloved grandchildren (Ziya, True, Eila, Garin and Dallyn). A memorial mass will be celebrated at St Francis of Assisi in Henderson on Friday, June 14th at 10:30 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be at the Schneider residence beginning at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Joyce's honor to Discovery Children's Museum. Find Joy in Everyday – just like Joyce!

CYNTHIA ZEIDNERCynthia Zeidner, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 due to complications surrounding a fall in her home. She departed this life surrounded by loved ones, and her loss is unexpected, leaving those who knew her profoundly saddened. Cynthia was born on December 2nd, 1938, and was raised as part of a close family. She had a way of endearing herself to people, and usually had pleasant stories or anecdotes to tell, of her father and of cousins in her life, even from a young age. She led a remarkable and interesting life, including some travel, and youth spent with a Kibbutz in Israel. She was an active and practicing member of the Jewish community throughout her life, as well as an Officer in the Daughters of the Nile, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of, and sang in the Adult Choir for Congregation Ner Tamid for many years. She was an outspoken optimist, and loved the people around her. Unafraid to express herself and her beliefs, be they political, religious, or just feelings she had, Cynthia had a large and comforting presence in everything she was a part of. She was a retired civilian employee of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, a job she held dear, regularly sharing stories of her time there, and the generally pleasant, positive interactions she had with the Officers. In her later years, she was a part of a Pub Trivia team, where she nurtured several of her friendships and made many more. She loved her social life, and made sure to keep people involved in her later years, and she made sure to make every occasion she was a part of special. From her colorful discussions at the Passover Seder this year, to the large presence she had at Andrea and Ayo's recent wedding, the void in the lives of her friends and family left behind is not going to be easily filled. She will be sorely missed. A Family and Friends service will be held at King David Memorial Chapel and Cemetery at 1:00 pm on Friday 06/07/2024. 2697 E El Dorado Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89120. She will be traveling to California soon after the service, and will be laid to rest at Mt. Sinai and Memorial park in Los Angeles.

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (10)

BETTY BRADSHAW FOLEYBetty Foley woke up every morning singing "Home Means Nevada." Her daily outpouring of love for her state was only surpassed by her love for her family. Betty Bradshaw Foley died on May 30, 2024 at the age of 96. Born in St. George, Utah on June 21, 1927, she was the fifth of seven children of Ruben and Ethel Bradshaw of Elgin, Nevada. Betty's grandfather arrived in Nevada and homesteaded the Elgin Ranch in 1864, the year Nevada became a state. Betty's maternal ancestors developed the polygamist community of Bunkerville, Nevada in 1877, where her great grandfather Dudley Leavitt, boasted five wives and 56 children. Upon earning her teaching certificate at the University of Nevada, Reno, after WWII, Betty returned to Elgin to teach in the Elgin One-Room Schoolhouse, which is now part of the Nevada State Park System. She delighted in sharing family Ranch stories until the end. At the University, she met a dashing veteran, Joe Foley, and embarked on a life of adventure. In 1950, they married at St. Anne Catholic Church in Las Vegas and immediately began their family delivering 9 babies in 10 years at St. Rose de Lima Hospital in Henderson. Her sister, Kathy McDaniel, and her tribe of four were always included in all Foley activities. The family moved to 15th Street in 1955 to be close to St. Anne's and Gorman High School where there were 47 kids on the same street who attended the nearby Catholic schools. Betty was very active in the Service League of Las Vegas, PEO, Pi Beta Phi, Home of the Good Shepherd Auxiliary and the St. Anne PTA. She also participated in a bridge club for more than 50 years which included many of Las Vegas' original matriarchs. There wasn't a soul who didn't adore her. Known for her compassion, love, gourmet cooking and very quick wit, Betty and Joe were boat people and spent most weekends on Lake Mead. They taught all the kids and their friends to water ski. Betty always welcomed extra kids to hang out on the boat or on 15th Street for dinner. She was a mom to so many of her children's friends. She had a fun sassy side, was an unapologetic winner at Spite and Malice card game, and loved to shimmy her shoulders as family and friends sang Patsy Cline songs and "Home Means Nevada." Betty was known for her famous wink or squeeze to let you know she loved you. She is survived by six children: Jeanne Clarke (Will), Helen Foley, Kathleen Meyer (Rex, deceased) Dan Foley (Diana), Patrick Foley (Julie), and Shannon Foley Lyman (Rick), 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The family gives special thanks to Jay, Lori and Shayne who provided her with loving care in her final years. Family and friends will say farewell and celebrate the last "15th Street mom," who was also the last Bradshaw and Foley of her generation, Friday night June 7 at 5-7pm - visitation Palm Mortuary, 1325 N Main Street, Las Vegas and Celebration of Life Mass on Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made online to St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation at www.supportstrose.org/betty-foley or via mail to St. Rose Dominican Health Foundation, 102 E. Raphael Cohen died on May 31st, 2024 after battling Cancer. He was 70 years old. Rafi was born in Jerusalem, Israel and came to the United States in 1975 after meeting his future wife while she was travelling abroad. He came to the US with an 8th grade education, barely spoke or read English and had $60 in his wallet (in traveller's checks). What Rafi did have, was a strong work ethic and worked as hard as he could in various professions, eventually getting a handle of the English language while on the job. Ultimately, he found his calling in the jewelry industry and opened up his first jewelry store in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1977. He would open up more stores, including Raphael Jewelers in Framingham and on Boylston Street in Boston. In 1994, he decided to move towards the wholesale jewelry industry and became the distributor for several jewelry and wristwatch lines. He even designed and manufactured his own watch lines. In 2003, he moved his life and business to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he continued his wholesale business but also opened up several "TeNo" stores on the Las Vegas strip and, most recently, Raphael Fine Jewelry on Flamingo Rd. Rafi was a huge Arsenal soccer fan, a workaholic, and a lover of good food and smoking weed. He was also a tech nerd, who bought the first commercially available Apple computer as soon as it came out and never stopped. He always needed the newest gadgets as soon as they were released. He understood that the future was "tech" and it was important and needed to be on top of it.He is survived by his life partner (and business partner), Sherri Cohen; his children, David Cohen and Nadine Kluger; his grandchild, Henry Kluger; his brothers, Rami Cohen (and wife Mirav), Sason Cohen and a sister, Leora Malka. Additionally, he leaves to mourn his passing several extended family members and thousands of friends and colleagues around the world. A funeral service will be held at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 E Eldorado Ln, Las Vegas, NV 89120 on Monday, June 3rd at 10:00am with a burial to follow.A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on 2024-06-03 at King David Memorial Chapel, 2697 E. <![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (15)

HOWARD COHENMay 1, 1944 - April 19, 2024It is with tremendous sorrow that I announce the passing of a true Renaissance man, Howard Cohen, who left us at the age of 79 due to a heart attack. He was a man who did it all, seen it all, and certainly did it his way. He was a tasteful blend of intellectual, creative, and personality traits that always made him the most interesting man in the room. Howard is survived by his wife, Dianna. His love and adoration for her knew no bounds. He never missed a day telling her how beautiful she was and how much he loved her. She brought a key element to his life, peace. Howard loved to have fun, laugh, and make memories. Howard was caring and generous, had class and panache, was a great wingman, and was a real pal. He was always there for his friends when needed. Howard had a knack for ensuring the kind of service he desired, often utilizing what he called "the green ticket." He displayed great generosity towards organizations dedicated to assisting less fortunate members of society. The man was like a key master because he could open any door. There was never a "No" with Howard Cohen. Like a true genius, he could intuitively improvise his way through any situation. He possessed a unique ability to think beyond conventional boundaries. Howard enjoyed playing tennis and loved to swim. He was multifaceted, a master negotiator, a fascinating storyteller, and wasted no time getting things done. He was loved and appreciated, while also being feared and respected. Howard Gary Cohen was born in Manhattan, NY, on May 1, 1944. Shortly after his birth, his parents, Dorothy and Jack Cohen, moved to Miami Beach, FL, where Howard spent his formative years and developed his character. Howard received a baseball scholarship to play 3B at the University of Miami and would later play minor-league ball for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was #3 in your program but #1 in your heart. He was surrounded by some of the era's most powerful and influential people. As a child, he would dine at Jimmy Hoffa's house and sit on his lap. After years of proving his worth being streetwise, savvy, and an overall wise guy, Howard relocated to Las Vegas, NV. He began dealing Blackjack, but it wasn't long before he became an executive at Caesar's Palace. Howard had extensive knowledge of the gaming industry. He met high rollers from all over the world and utilized his great networking skills to engage in several side projects that led him to new and interesting places. Howard owned a racehorse named Boofa Shoes. He raced her at Santa Anita, Del Mar, and Los Alamitos, where she finished dead last in every race. During his pal Frank Sinatra's performance in Miami, Howard arranged for his mother and her friends to attend. Sinatra surprised them by singing a song directly to her booth, concluding with birthday wishes from Howard. Howard had a creative mind that ultimately led him to Hollywood, Howard was proudly signed by CAA, where he had instant success. Howard became an accomplished television Executive producer and maintained close relationships with cable and broadcast networks. In 2000, he sold the show "Chuck Zito's Street Justice" to the USA network. His next show, "Las Vegas Law," for Court TV, starring his friend and best man Bucky Buchanon. During this time, Howard founded Outside the Box Entertainment and co-founded iO Film, a feature film post-production company that was on the cutting edge of film digital color correcting and mastering. The company became the go-to facility for Hollywood's independent films. It cemented its reputation when the movie Crash, which iO Film mastered, won three Academy Awards, including for Best Picture and Best Editing. Soon after, Howard led the company to its new 26,000 square foot location in the heart of Hollywood, just off Sunset Boulevard. They contributed to other films such as Monster, Saved, Black Christmas, The Messengers, and The Celestine Prophecy, just to name a few. Through his work, Howard left an indelible mark on the industry, earning the respect and admiration of peers and audiences alike. After his Hollywood career concluded, Howard returned to Las Vegas, where he continued to be an active member of the community. He devoted the rest of his life to loving and supporting his wife, Dianna, ensuring she had everything she needed, personally and professionally. Howard took great pride in being a devoted husband, always being there for her. Sadly, Howard Cohen passed away the morning after their 34th anniversary, with his beloved wife by his side. <![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (17)

GROVER LEWISGrover Lewis, a pioneering mathematician and key figure in the development of early computing, passed away on May 16, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Born in 1936 in Grady, Arkansas to Jesse and Mary Lewis, Grover journeyed from a one-room school in Grady to the forefront of early technological innovation. Grover grew up on his family's farm outside of Grady, Arkansas, and was baptized at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, which was located on the family property. (Later in life, Grover would donate land from his farm for the Church to erect a new building). Grover left Arkansas to attend high school in East Chicago, Illinois, and returned to Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1952 to attend Arkansas AM&N College. Grover was the first person in his family to attend college, and he pursued a career in mathematics. Grover was the Class Parliamentarian, the President of the Math Club, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, and Business Manager for the College Yearbook. After graduating from Arkansas AM&N, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where -- despite having to sit in the back of the class and being denied campus housing because of his race - - he earned his master's degree in mathematics in 1957, becoming the first African-American to earn a master's in mathematics from the University of Arkansas. Grover then took his keen intellect and embarked on a career where he would play a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of modern computing. Following his master's, Grover joined the University of California's Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico. Grover was part of the team that worked on the initial programming for the first large computer developed by IBM (called "Stretch"). Grover's pioneering work in computing led to numerous advances in the field. Grover was also involved in early nuclear testing and was present for some of the harrowing above-ground atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. More pleasantly, his work would also take him to New York City, where he reconnected with former classmate Elsie Lavonne Hunter. The two were married on September 30, 1961, and had three children together. In 1965, Grover left Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and the family moved to Los Angeles, California, where Grover worked for Computer Sciences Corporation. CSC then won a contract from the Department of Energy to lead the selection of a new computer for the Department's Nevada Test Site operations. Grover was appointed as the Information Systems Manager, prompting a move to Las Vegas in 1968. Grover later joined the Department of Energy, and was the Director of Information Systems at the Department of Energy until his retirement in 2003. Grover was an avid sports fan, an excellent bowler, a skillful bridge player, and a tenacious tennis player. He loved listening to music (of all genres), dancing with Lavonne, and applying his analytical skills to investing. He leaves to mourn his passing his life partner, Elsie Lavonne Hunter Lewis, his children, Erica Lewis, Gordon Lewis (wife Kara Stuart Lewis), and Marianne Lewis, his grandchildren, Cassandra Lewis, Eleanor Lewis, and Grady Lewis, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service to honor Grover Lewis's life and legacy will be held at Palm Mortuary at 1325 N. Main Street, Las Vegas, Nevada on June 4, 2024. A viewing will be held at 12:00 p.m., the funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., and the burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in memory of Grover Lewis. Checks should be mailed to: Office of Alumni Affairs, 1200 North University Drive, Mail Slot 4929, Pine Bluff, AR 71601. Please make checks payable to Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund and include Grover Lewis on the memo line. For additional information, you may call the UAPB Office of Alumni Affairs at (870) 575-8499.

In 1974, Gary and Barbara earned their pilot license and enjoyed many hours of flying in their Cesna 702. In the early 1980's, Barbara became the bookkeeper for Gary. H. Kent, Inc, a commercial real estate appraisal firm through 2007. During this time and when they were nearing their empty nesters stage, Barbara earned her Emergency Medical Technician State of Nevada Certificate on April 1, 1989. After a few experiences in the UMC emergency room, she quickly realized that while bookkeeping was dull, it was not all that bad. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, Barbara made a formal turkey dinner with 11 side dishes and enjoyed entertaining friends and family throughout the year. When she wasn't cooking a feast, Barbara enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. She was known as the kingpin of her bridge group. In her spare time, it was easy catching her focused on a crossword puzzle. She was survived by her two daughters Hella Pollizi (Monte Pollizi husband) and Heidi Meidenbauer (Eric Meidenbauer husband); Grandchildren Remington Brown (26) and Haley Meidenbauer (18). Barbara will be cherished by all whose lives she touched.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved wife, sister, mother, and grandmother, Connie Connell Crum. At the age of 74, she left us to be with the Lord on May 19, 2024. A true matriarch, this woman of strength, devotion, kindness, and love will be forever missed.Connie leaves behind her husband, Robert; her daughters, Tara (Christopher) Guerrieri and Alise (Rob) Elwood; her sons, Michael and David; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her dog, Bella.Connie cherished her family, friendships, relationships, and dogs most in life, and her commitment to them was undeniable. Examples of her love and those who dearly loved her are woven throughout her life.Born in Delta, Utah, on November 13, 1949, to Dillworth and Mildred Steele, Connie lived there for only a few years before they moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1953.In Las Vegas, she met her lifelong best friend and sister, Sandie Briggs. Meeting when they were just eight years old, their unbreakable bond remained strong for sixty-four years. "She was the most wonderful, generous, and caring person in our world."Vegas is also where Connie met her husband, Robert. Together since 1983, she joined her husband as he pursued his career, and she devoted herself to her family, home, and community. They moved from Las Vegas to the suburbs of Chicago, then to Sacramento, and back to Las Vegas. Throughout these moves, she built friendships and made people feel loved and cared for. No birthday or anniversary was ever missed; no card or gift went unsent. No matter where she went, Connie was always known as the most loving, caring, and generous person, always making her house a home for children, friends, and family. Our world, this world, is empty without her, and her absence will forever leave a void in our hearts.Out of respect for Connie's wishes, her service will be private. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

MARY LOU "BUNNY" WILco*ckMary Lou (Bunny) Wilco*ck, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, passed on May 15, 2024 with family by her side at the age of 92. Bunny was born on September 5, 1931, in San Mateo, California to the late Stephen Tinker and Lucia Kilduff Tinker. She grew up in Redwood City, California, then moved to Pioche for a few years after marrying Ed Drake. It was there she gave birth to her first two sons, Tom and Dave. Tragically, Ed passed when the boys were babies. A family friend, Cyril Wilco*ck, stepped in to help. They fell in love, were married, and moved to Henderson. Their third son, Alan, soon joined the family. Bunny lived in Henderson for the next 70 years. She worked a few interesting jobs then settled in with the school district for 30 years until she retired from Burkholder Junior High as their registrar. Bunny was a long-time member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and played the organ during Mass for many years. She was a devout Catholic, and her husband, Cy, was a member of the LDS faith. She was involved with both churches and welcomed whomever came to her door. Bunny was fond of traditions and loved to bring her family together for holidays. We all spent many a Christmas Eve, Easter, and Thanksgiving at their home on Wyoming Street. She was an avid and talented bowler and served as secretary of her bowling league for several years. Bunny enjoyed camping and after losing her husband, Cy, continued that hobby loading up and hitching the trailer on her own and taking off to various campsites to meet friends and family. She loved to travel taking trips to the north-eastern states, California, Canada, Alaska, Italy, and Greece. She was fortunate to meet another love later in life, Tony, who became her companion and partner for several years until he passed. Bunny was a tough and resilient lady with a generous heart and a strong will. She was blessed to have lived a full life filled with love, laughter, and adventures. She was preceded in death by her husbands, John "Ed" Drake and Cyril "Cy" Wilco*ck; her youngest son, Raymond Alan Wilco*ck; her parents, Stephen Tinker and Lucia Kilduff Tinker; brother, Tom Tinker; and sister, Martha Reynick. Bunny will forever be remembered by her sons, Tom Drake (Karen) and Dave Drake (Debra); daughter-in-law, Connie Wilco*ck; grandchildren, Angela (Rick), Pamela (Bob), David, Susan, John, Taryn (Jerrod) and Matthew (Val); and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 9am on Thurs. May 30th at Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, NV 89015. Mass to follow at 11 a.m., St. Peter The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 204 S. Barbara A (Bobbie) Dugan, age 86, of Henderson, Nevada passed away peacefully after a short stay in hospice on Friday, May 3, 2024.Bobbie was born in Toledo, Ohio, and grew up in a blended family that included eight rambunctious children. More often than not, Bobbie was known as the ringleader if there was trouble afoot. When Bobbie was young, she visited a friend in Las Vegas. Rather than heading home at the end of her stay, she called her brother and asked him to pack up her things and send them to the place that she would call home for the rest of her life. In true Bobbie fashion, she thrived in the casino industry. She shined as Head co*cktail Waitress at the Golden Nugget, as a union dispatcher for the casinos, and as Head Bell Captain at the Monte Carlo. She never forgot to help those around her to shine as well. So many of the friends that she made during her career have called her "Mom" because they found comfort, laughter, and encouragement in her light.Bobbie loved anything BTS, Trader Joe's, and anything that sparkled. She especially cherished the nights that she spent watching "The Masked Singer" with her dear friends, Brad and Lori Rich. The family would like to thank Henderson Hospital and Nathan Adelson Hospice for their care and concern during Bobbie's final days. She is survived by sisters Virginia Leininger and Rita Mockensturm; brother George Kanfield, numerous nieces, nephews; and by all her many, many friends in Las Vegas, who she held as close as family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Dugan; her parents Romy, Virginia, and Adeline Kanfield; her sister Donna White; and brothers, Jim, David, and Dennis Kanfield. She will be missed by so many...Celebration of Life is pending. <![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (35)

VICTORIA LYNN HARDWICK6-28-1959 - 5-18-2024Forever in our hearts, Victoria "Vicky" Lynn Hardwick was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and fiancé. She left this world peacefully on May 18, 2024, at the age of 64, and will be greatly missed. She had a sweet childlike innocence that endeared her to the hearts of all who met her. She was born to Lawrence and Masako "Pat" Hardwick on June 28, 1959, at the U.S. Army Hospital in Fort Dix, New Jersey. After graduating from high school in Maple Shade, NJ, she moved with her parents to Las Vegas, NV in 1978. She loved her first job at a daycare center, taking care of the littlest babies. And her co-workers loved her, in turn, for her willingness to take the earliest shift, showing up to work at the crack of dawn. Vicky next worked as a stocker at the commissary on Nellis Air Force Base, where she met her future fiancé, Curtis Harven. She and Curtis enjoyed 20+ wonderful years together as soulmates. The simplest pleasures of life brought a smile to Vicky's face. She loved seeing the neighborhood cats and their kittens come by to drink from the water bowls she set out for them, as well as the colorful sunsets, fireworks, and all the beautiful downtown lights from her kitchen windows. She also enjoyed watching "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune" with her mom in the evenings. But she was happiest when she was with her fiancé, Curtis, the one true love of her life. She was deeply spiritual and was a member of Grace Baptist Church until 2020, when she began attending Living Water Baptist Church with her mother. Vicky is survived by her loving mother, Masako "Pat" Hardwick, brother, Russell Hardwick, sister, Elizabeth (James) Chase, niece, Melissa (Nathan Seither) Titus, and fiancé, Curtis Harven. There will be no memorial service at the family's request. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the cat rescue of your choice on her behalf.

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (37)

Robert David Safbom of Las Vegas passed away peacefully in his sleep January 31, 2024, at the age of 96. He was born to David and Mae Safbom on August 21st, 1927, in Chicago, Ill. Robert or "Bob" began his industrious career fresh out of high school in 1945. Bob was eager to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy. Bob's efforts were cut short months later with Japan's unconditional surrender.Unknown to Bob at the time was that his disappointingly short career on the world's oceans would instead lead to a distinguished career in the sky. Recruiters visited his college from a fledgling branch of the armed forces deemed the United States Air Force, and signed Bob based on his previous military service and academic progress. On September 30,1949 he graduated USAF "Fighter Pilotage" flight training program. As a mere 22-year-old, LT. Robert Safbom was flying combat missions over Korea in an F-80, America's first operational jet fighter. He left Korea 116 missions later with a Distinguished Flying Cross and a broken heart after his best friend, Dick Barton, was killed on a strafing run. Bob missed him for the rest of his life. After the war, while stationed at Nellis AFB, Bob met the love of his life, Patricia Jewel Mathews. They married soon thereafter, and the ceremony was attended by his wingman, future astronaut Lt. Virgil "Gus" Grissom. During military service Bob and Pat traveled much of the world together and raised four children. After finishing his military career Bob moved to Las Vegas and moved the family into a home he built. After a brief stint as an insurance salesperson, Bob felt the need to return to flying. He became a certified flight instructor and bought a local flight school, Nevada Aviation Services. NAS trained hundreds of local pilots and specialized in providing commercial flight training to individuals using the GI bill. One student Bob thought was exceptional was an F-4 pilot stationed at Nellis AFB, Captain Chesley Sullenberger. Bob instructed the future hero of the Hudson in his endeavor to attain the necessary civilian ratings to work for the airlines. The rest is history. Bob sold his flight school in the early 1980s and finished his career flying visitors to the Grand Canyon, a place he genuinely loved. Bob was predeceased by both of his parents, his beloved wife Patricia, granddaughter Ramsey Grimes, daughter-in-law Debbie Safbom, and daughter Lindsey Safbom. He is survived by his brother, Bruce "Butch" Safbom, sister Gloria "Dolly" Hintz, sons Brock Safbom, Daniel Safbom (Terri), daughter Stacy Safbom, grandsons Nicolas Safbom, LT. Conor Safbom (USN), Michael Safbom, Gabriel Cressy, and Ethan Spears, step-grandson Christopher March (Monica) and children, and great-grandson Ethan Calloway. To borrow from Bob's favorite poem 'High Flight" by Canadian Air Force pilot John Gillespie Magee Jr., "On January 31st USAF Captain Robert David Safbom flew his last sortie and 'slipped the surly bonds of earth, put out his hand and touched the face of God'."A memorial service will be held from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM on 2024-05-28 at Southern Nevada Veterans' Memorial Cemetary, 1900 Veterans' Memorial Drive Boulder City, NV 89005.

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (40)

DIANE LYNN REEDChristmas came early in 1945 for Ned and Mildred Miller in Miles City, Montana, when Diane Lynn arrived on the 12th of December. Because of her father's government work, the family moved often. She acquired most of her elementary education in Dallas, Texas. She graduated valedictorian from high school in Hopewell, Virginia, and used her accomplished academic skills to complete her degree in education from the College of William and Mary in just three years. While her father acted as the Associate Warden for the Federal Prison in Milan, Michigan, Diane lived with her parents and gained her first year of experience as an elementary teacher in a school nearby. Seeking greater adventure, she accepted a teaching position with the Department of Defense at Ramey Air Force Base and moved to Puerto Rico. In this tropical paradise, while attending master's degree courses in Guidance and Counseling, she met her husband, Joel Reed, who was flying B-52 strategic bombers from the island. They were married in a picturesque crimson hibiscus covered chapel on the base and honeymooned on Curacao to launch their 55-year partnership. They toured the island of Puerto Rico and lounged on the Caribbean beaches until Joel was reassigned to F-4 Phantom fighter training at Victorville, California. Upon completion of training, Joel endured a combat tour in Southeast Asia flying out of Thailand while Diane nervously waited in Atlanta, Georgia, with her parents for his return. She joined her husband in Asia for a short leave and visited many key landmarks around the Thai kingdom. The next Air Force assignment took this loving couple to the formerly war-tom island of Okinawa, where Joel continued flying the F-4 Phantom and Diane reactivated her teaching and guidance counselor skills in the base school. They reveled in several trips throughout the orient visiting fabled places such as Penang and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the island nation of Singapore, Manilla in the Philippines, and Hong Kong. The next assignment brought the couple to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas where Joel helped initiate a key training program for US and Allied forces using the nearby desert ranges. Diane returned to the classroom during this exciting and event-filled tour. The following adventure planted the pair in the crowded hustle of Seoul, Republic of Korea, while Joel accomplished complex staff work for the Combined Forces Command, UN Command, US Forces Command and Eighth US Army. To fill her time, Diane taught children of military personnel assigned to the Korean base, as well as some college level courses for American soldiers. After two freezing winters on the Korean peninsula, Joel and Diane returned to Las Vegas and his final active-duty assignment at Nellis Air Force Base as an intelligence officer. Diane was again drawn back into the classrooms of the Clark County School District, where she continued to mold the minds of Nevada's children. She continued in the classroom amassing over thirty years of dedicated contributions to teach the youth of America. After final retirement, Diane and her life-partner enjoyed cruises to Europe, highlighted by tours around her ancestral origin locales of Norway. Their last adventure took them on a sailing circuit around picturesque New Zealand. After an eventful and giving life filled with adventure, Diane succumbed to a rare cancer on April 23, 2024, at the age of 78. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joel Reed of over 55 years, who remains in Las Vegas, sister Judith Trojan and husband Randy of Temple, Texas, sister Nancy Kay Mellor and husband Gary Mellor of Pinehurst, Texas, nephews Ryan Hobbs and family of North Logan, Utah, Travis Hobbs and family of Pinehurst, Texas, nieces Jamie Trojan of Temple, Texas, Chylynn Carlisle, Sheena Thomas, sister-in-law Susan Carlisle and husband David of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She will be missed by countless friends and former students gathered from years of cooperative classroom associations. She truly lived a full and meaningful life while making vital contributions to society and our great nation.

Denie moved to Las Vegas and happily called it home for nearly 25 years, as she shared a life alongside her mother, and sister, Arlene, a.k.a. "The Golden Girls". Denie is preceded in death by both her parents, Allan and Julia King, and more recently, her sister, Arlene King. Denie is survived by her daughter and best friend, Jodi (Stephon Freides), her son, Scott (Kristen Veum), and grandchildren Julia and Joshua. She is also survived by her dear brother, Harvey King (Barbara) and baby sister, Shari Jacobs (Howard Klein). Denie always said her greatest and most special birthday gift was her sister, Shari, as they shared the same birthday 7 years apart. Denie was rooted in the love of her family and words cannot describe how big her heart was. She will be sorely missed by her entire family – including many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. As she wished, details for a joint memorial dedication and celebration of life for Hildene "Denie" Holan and Arlene H. King will be announced soon. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.palmeastern.com for the family.

When Kent wasn't practicing medicine, you could find him golfing at Las Vegas Country Club with his buddies. He was an avid golfer with a 6 handicap in his prime. He played golf at modified levels with his Ali Baba golf buddies until the very end, boasting about how much money he would win, usually $2 - $5. When not out on the golf course, you could find Kent playing poker where he played at some large tournaments in Las Vegas. Kent's biggest accomplishment in life were his children (Mike, Julie, Rob, and Bill). He would see them all complete their college education, marry, and start families of their own. He adored all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family and never failed to attend a family gathering or event. His true legacy in life was his family and he was a very proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Kent is preceded in death by his father Jo H. SHIRLEY GLORIA DIMARTINOThe DiMartino family announces the passing of Shirley Gloria DiMartino at the age of 94 on May 2, 2024. She passed peacefully in her sleep. In 1973 Shirley and her husband Emiddio "Dee" moved to Las Vegas, NV from South Orange, New Jersey. It was there that they opened their first deli, "DiMartino's Italian Deli" with their children; Ricky, Terese, David, Mark, Gigi & Aimee. Shortly thereafter, the deli became "DiMartino's Italian Restaurant." For 30 years DiMartino's was one of the premier Italian restaurants in Las Vegas. The DiMartino's restaurant encompassed Shirley's love and passion for Italian food, and family. Everyone that entered was treated as such. Shirley liked simplicity and warmth in her surroundings. Her philosophy "simple good food is beautiful." Shirley DiMartino was a kind and caring Mother of 7, Grandmother of 9, and Great Grandmother of 7. All of which were her pride and joy. Shirley loved watching tennis and having a good laugh. She encouraged all around her. Her love was felt everywhere, but most of all in her cooking. Shirley could fix just about any problem with a well-cooked meal. Anyone who has had the pleasure to taste her cooking knew it was something special. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was cherished by many. She is missed dearly. Tiamo, tiamo, tiamo, tiamo.

<![CDATA[Las Vegas Review Journal: All Categories]]> (48)

Janet Fay Sabes (née Sommerland), age 83, of Wayzata, was born on February 17, 1941, and passed on May 15, 2024. She will be remembered for her devotion, kindness, and love as a wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend throughout her entire life. Anyone lucky enough to know Janet knew they were with someone special. She was beautiful and intelligent, and she possessed strength and kindness that were as uncommon as unconditional. Janet grew up in South Minneapolis, attending Roosevelt High School, where she described herself as "pretty normal." However, that's not what anyone else saw; they saw someone extraordinary. So, too, did her soon-to-be boyfriend and then-husband, Bob Sabes, when she caught his eye at the Porky's Drive-In on Lake Street. Janet attended the University of Minnesota, where she found Bob waiting outside her classroom, seeking his first date. Janet and Bob married on April 15, 1966, and soon had three sons, Jon, Steven, and Ross. While raising her family, Janet embraced and hosted her extended family, welcoming everyone with love and kindness. Athletic and strong, she started playing tennis when she wasn't busy raising her boys or helping Bob with his entrepreneurial ventures. She won the over-35 Minnesota State Doubles Championship in 1982 and the over-45 National Doubles Championship in 1987. Later, when her boys had grown up, she decided to learn how to play golf, quickly becoming one of her age's top local women's golfers. Janet described her life as fulfilled and incredible, always including an ode to Dr. Seuss's "Oh the Places You'll Go!", referencing the five years she and Bob spent traveling the globe in their floating condominium on "The World" and spending time at their homes in Wayzata, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas. She always expressed feelings of love, kindness, and gratitude to the individuals who touched her life, going out of her way to make everyone she touched feel special because she believed they were. However, the capstone of Janet's life was her family and grandchildren, which she valued above all else. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and survive her. May she rest in peace for eternity. Janet is survived by her husband, Bob; sons Jon (Kristine), Steven (Maggie O'Gara), and Ross (Dawn); grandchildren, Jackson, Brooke, Lauren, Hanah, Morgan, Joe, Natalie, and Kelsey Sherer; sister-in-law, Raliegh Boukather; and an extended network of family and friends, all of whom will miss the bright joy and happiness she brought into their lives. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Mabel Sommerland; sisters, Karen Bush and Sandra; brother, Gary; parents-in-law, Moe and Esther Sabes; and an extended network of family and friends she loved and cared for. Funeral service 1:00 pm SUNDAY, May 19th at ADATH JESHURUN CONGREGATION, 10500 Hillside Lane West, Minnetonka. SHIVA 7:00 pm Sunday at Adath Jeshurun Congregation. Funeral is also available via livestream at: www.hodroffs.com/JanetSabes.A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on 2024-05-19 at Adath Jeshurun Congregation, 10500 Hillside Lane West, Minnetonka MN 55305.

After graduating from Las Vegas High School, Don enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam conflict and served in Thailand as a radio operator. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Don worked at Central Telephone Company for many years. But he wanted to be a firefighter and in 1980 was hired by the Clark County Fire Department. Soon after that, he met Sue; they married, and had their two boys. Over Don's 25 years at the CCFD, he rose through the ranks to Captain. Besides his family, Don loved reading books, enjoying a glass of wine and a cigar, camping, fishing, hunting, and hiking. But Don's most important love was that of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and learning the truth of the Word of God, as taught by our faithful Pastor Teacher. It was that Word of God in his soul that enabled Don to get through to the end of his suffering from Pancreatic cancer. Never did he complain because Don knew that this was God's perfect plan for his life. There will be a Memorial Service for Don on Saturday, June 8th, at 1:00 P.M., at Upland Bible Church, 920 Upland Boulevard, Las Vegas, Nevada. Following his service, please join us for a BBQ lunch at their home.
