Psalm 1 proclaims truths echoed in the book of Proverbs: that following the wisdom of God is the best and wisest way to live. Like Proverbs, this psalm declares that those who obey God's teachings can avoid consequences arising from sin and disobedience.

Indeed, Psalm 23 is more about how a person lives in relationship to God than how one faces death or finds security beyond the grave. Psalm 23:1 summarizes the message of the whole. Verse 1a declares, “The Lord is my shepherd” and thus acknowledges God as the one who protects and guides.

No single English translation will ever represent the original biblical languages perfectly. Why? In part because the Bible's ancient languages do not function like English. A word in Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic might not have an exact English word to match.

This Psalm has a warning and a promise. The warning describes the downward journey of a person who would rather listen to the chorus of this world rather than the word of God. While the promise is for the righteous only. At first, a person begins by listening to the advice of the ungodly.

God's way is meant for our benefit and blessing. When we rebel, when we sin, or mock, or go our own way, we will reap loss and death. To love God's law, to know it, and practice it, leads us to spiritual health and peace. God will judge all people and all actions in the end.

From Psalm 1, we learn that humanity is divided into two distinct camps: those who are rightly related to God by faith and those who are alienated from Him as a result of their sin and unbelief. We have a choice to follow one of two paths: one leads to a life of blessing; the other to a life of difficulty and judgment.
