Instructors for the workshop are professional journalists who are members of the Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists, the workshop's sponsor. Students will specialize in newspapers, television, radio or public relations. About 60 students will be selected for the 1992 workshop. The workshop will be held on Saturdays, from 9 a.m.

"It's designed to increase the number of minorities in the field of journalism." She noted that minorities blacks, Hispanics, Asians and American Indians make up fewer than 9 percent of all journalists nationwide.

For a panel of journalists, a politician and lawyer Sunday, the question was why? When is a public private life fair game to a reporter, and when does a private person become public? The St. Louis chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists sponsored the panel at Washington University. Patricia Hirl Longstaff, a lawyer from Minneapolis specializing in media law, said here Sunday that a reporter's most important mission should not be to protect people from being hurt, threatened or embarrassed. Geri Rothman-Serot, St. Louis County council member, D-3rd District, said: "It's the responsibility of the press to let it all hang out there and let the people decide."
