Tessa Thompson was born in Los Angeles, California on October 3, 1983. She was raised between where she was born and Brooklyn in New York. Her father, Marc Anthony Thompson is a singer, songwriter, and the founder of the musical collective, Chocolate Genius, Inc. He is Afro-Panamanian and her mother is half Mexican and half American ancestry. She has a younger half-sister, Zsela who is also a singer and songwriter.
Tessa Thompson attended Santa Monica High School. After graduation, she attended Santa Monica College where she joined the Los Angeles Women’s Shakespeare Company (LAWSC) and attend Lisa Wolpe’s lectures there.
