The Salt Lake Tribune from Salt Lake City, Utah (2024)

The Salt Lake Tribune, Monday, January 9, 1961 25 Autos Crash Head on, Injure Two A head on collision on Brew. ery Hill, 450-10th East, Sunday at 5:41 p.m., injured a Salt Lake man and an Ogden man. STEPHEN Davies, 20, 1703 Harrison Ave. (1355 South), driver of one car, suffered a fractured right knee cap. He was listed in fair condition at LDS Hospital, John -M.

Haws, 26, 1047-20th Ogden, a passenger in the second auto, suffered severe head and left leg injuries. He, too, was listed in fair condition at LDS Hospital. INVESTIGATING Officers Blaine Poulsen and Farrell Stewart said the Davies vehicle was 'eastbound when it 'collided with a westbound car: driven by William Dafferson, 41, 2177 Jefferson Ogden. THE OFFICERS said the highway is divided, a metal I barricade separating the two traffic lanes, the Dafferson vehicle apparently had entered the of traffic at 11th East and 5th South. Both vehicles were demolished.

Mr. Dafferson was booked in city jail on charges of drunken driving. He explained that "a conflict is on now, but when and where it will become armed, I don't know." This will not happen within the next five years, however, he predicted, but "10 years from now, I wouldn't be surprised to see that (the Russian-Chinese) relationship ended." HOW CAN THIS situation affect us? "It's a good situation to be in," Mr. Salisbury opined, "if we utilize our advantages." He explained that "in certain cir c*mstances" we might manipulate the situation to our advantage either by "setting them at loggerheads with one another" or "getting one of them on our side." "I THINK WE are in for an era of rapidly shifting power factors in the world," he said. "We've got two.

Communist powers, neutral areas in Asia and Africa, Europe further away from us than before--the pieces are moving around on the chess board." Asked if, in this cold war, there was more to fear from the Russians or the Chinese, Mr. Salisbury replied without hesitation, "I am more afraid of the Chinese than the Russian Communists." Ethel F. Obituaries A.1.C. John McKeon proudly demonstrates how his balsa wood F106 model will almost support his weight on body, No Plans for F106 Model! HAFB Airman Does Job Special to The Tribune HILL AIR FORCE BASE The Wright Brothers, Henri Bleriot and other aviation pioneers would have been proud of A.1.C. John McKeon. The "by-guess-and-by-golly" construction of airplanes of 50 years ago was aocompanied by of the pants" flying. BUT NOT SO WITH AIRMAN McKEON when he decided he wanted to build a model airplane, but couldn't find any plans for an F106 "Delta Dart." This enterprising F89 crew chief decided there was nothing like the real thing so he went to the Air Force technical manuals for the F106, gathered some additional information from technical publications, then went to work.

By using a scale of seven-tenths of an inch to one foot, he drew his own plans for his model jet, which he expects to rival its big brother in performance. USING A PULSE JET ENGINE which will generate four pounds of thrust, Airman McKeon expects his delta model to fly about 165 miles an hour, a record for planes of its size. To make his model the crew chief scrounged some discarded wood from the interior of a C47 and purchased some basla wood from the hobby shop. With the exception of the landing gear and the pulseJet engine, Airman McKeon has made all the parts of the plane by hand. However, he must either make or buy a flow injector, a fuel metering valve and a spark plug before his model will take to the air.
